Ayurvedic, a Sanskrit word meaning the
"science of life" ...

describes a 3000 year old complete system of medicine that details the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual elements that form the basis of health. With its philosophical roots in the Vedas of the Hindu culture, Ayurvedic has had an important influence on the development of other Oriental medical systems.

Common to all these systems is a view of the human body as a microcosm of the universe and an emphasis on life force, or energy, called prana in the Ayurvedic system and chi or qi in Chinese medicine. Ayurvedic medicine focuses on keeping these forces in balance.

A sophisticated and complete medical system, the Ayurvedic text, Charaka samhita, is considered a classic of internal medicine. Written 2000 years before the invention of the microscope, the text describes the body as being comprised of cells and includes a list of 20 different microscopic organisms that can cause disease and describes how disease spreads. Another text, Susrutha samhita, describes surgery, surgical equipment and pre and post surgical care.

Ayurvedic places emphasis on equilibrium -- balance of mind, body, spirit -- as well as living in harmony with external forces. It focuses on keeping the person healthy rather than on disease.
